Dr. Piper Center for Social Services, Inc
Again, I would like to reiterate our heartfelt thank and appreciation for the CAMEO of Lee County for the grant award of $3,000 this year. This grant award will provide 7,500 miles of transportation to over 500 frail elderly clients in Lee County through the Senior Companion Program. The goal of the Senior Companion Program is two-fold: One is to provide assistance to frail, homebound seniors 55 and older, thus preserving their quality of life and independence through client assessment and case management, simple housekeeping, companionship and friendship, running errands, advocacy and transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping or to senior centers. The second goal is to provide volunteer opportunities to low-income seniors 55 and older to serve identified frail elderly clients. Because of their low-income status volunteers are provided with a stipend of $2.65 an hour, mileage reimbursement of $.40 per mile and other benefits to cover the cost of volunteering. This program helps low-income seniors remain active and self-sufficient. It is the most cost effective program to maintain frail elderly clients in their own home and prevent premature institutionalization. This program is a win-win situation.
“My name is Maria Verbiest. I live in Lehigh Acres. I am writing to let you know how much I appreciate my volunteer companion, Lourdes Brea for taking me grocery shopping and doctor’s appointment. Thank you so much for providing this service. It will really be a hardship for me if I don’t have Ms. Brea. Thank you so much and God bless you.”
Destiny Diaper Bank
Dear CAMEO Grants Committee Chairman and Members,
Your donation of $2,000.00 to Destiny Ministries of Southwest Fl., Inc. DBA Destiny Diaper Bank is a blessing. Being the only adult diaper bank that is assisting Veterans, and Seniors in the state of Florida, we are looking toward the future that no one in need of incontinence supplies will go without. With your help we can establish more adult mobile diaper banks. I have big dreams and it is difficult to fulfill them when I am in survival mode. Your donation helps us to expand what we do and those we help.
So many of our Seniors are left behind and forgotten. When Hurricane Irma hit* we returned to a flooded building filled with diapers that had to get cleaned up ASAP. Destiny Rewards Center (our thrift store) and major source of income, was also destroyed. Most of what we had been building for the last 10 years was almost gone. All I knew was to clean up the mess and get out into the community. In the weeks to follow, Destiny Diaper Bank distributed over 23,000 adult diapers. We WILL accomplish our goals. Destiny Diaper Bank will leave no one behind.
I was surprised and overwhelmed when I heard $2,000. Some days I can barely breath for lack of funding, and you all made our life a little better. I have to say that the first thing I did was buy two commercial fans to go into our new rewards center that is not air conditioned. This building houses a lot of our diapers and donations that we pass on to others. Our vision is HUGE and you are now a part of making the future a little brighter. I am careful as to spending any money that we receive. I have so many things that need to be addressed and they all take money. I will keep you all informed as I move along with our projects.
At this time, we have established Destiny Mobile Diaper Bank that travels to at risk communities in Lehigh Acres, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Ft. Myers, and N. Ft. Myers once a month to assist our most fragile and vulnerable population that has challenges with transportation to pick up supplies. With your donation we will be able to bring quality of life and freedom to those in our area in need of incontinence supplies.
Again, thank you and God bless you for your donation to Destiny Diaper Bank.
